Collagen 101 FAQ
What is collagen?
Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein, making up approximately 30% of the proteins in our body. Collagen is the key structural protein that ensures the cohesion, elasticity and strength of all our connective tissues, including skin, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bones. It is basically the “glue” that holds our body together.
What happens when we age?
YOUR BODY CHANGES AROUND YOUR 30TH. YES! You heard right! In our adult years, our bodies begin to produce less collagen. This process begins in our mid 20’s, in full swing when we are around the age of 30 and accelerates in our 40’s – leading to the inevitable visual and noticeable signs of aging. Collagen loss is a natural process, but other factors such as exposure to UV, pollution, and lifestyle choices can lead to early or more intense signs of aging.
#scaryfact – After the age of 20, a person produces about 1% less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age.

How does collagen loss affect our bodies?
Because collagen is so important, losing it impacts many aspects of our bodies:
#Skin: Collagen provides firmness and structure to our skin. As collagen breakdown dominates over production with age, our skin becomes dehydrated and thinner, and signs of aging start to appear.
#Bones: As collagen levels and the content of minerals decrease, our bones get weaker. Gradually, this causes them to become more fragile and breakable.
#Joints: Aging wears and tears on the joint cartilage, reducing their well-functioning. This results in joint discomfort, making it harder for us to stay active as we age.
#Muscles: The loss of collagen by aging means a gradually less of it in the connective tissue that bundles muscle fibers into a strong and functioning muscle. Aging is linked to decreased muscle strength and function, which affects our balance, gait, and overall mobility.

FAQ
In our bodies, there are different types of collagen, 80 – 90% are either type I, II or III, with type I being the most common. The fibril structure of each type is the same: three long chains of amino acids in a compact triple helix structure but at molecular level, there are important differences.
Type I Collagen: strong skin, tendons & ligaments
Type I collagen forms the longest triple helices. This makes the structure of type I collagen extremely suitable to form strong fiber networks, that can be stretched without breaking. Those elastic structures provide support and flexibility to our body.
Type I collagen is found throughout the human body: it makes up more than 90% of organic bone mass, as well as comprising a major part of our skin, tendons and ligaments.
Type II Collagen: Flexible cartilage
Type II collagen is the collagen form present in cartilage (no type I in cartilage). Most importantly, it occurs in a natural matrix with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). While type II collagen provides tensile strength and elasticity to the tissue, the GAGs lubricate the cartilage, together providing the perfect matrix to absorb shock and bear stress.
Collagen naturally exists in our bodies and it is the most abundant protein found in the bones, muscles, skin, and tendons. Collagen supplements normally refer to collagen peptides hydrolyzed from native collagen from animal sources, which can be bovine (beef), porcine (pork) or fish. Our bovine collagen is sustainably-sourced from grass fed cows.
In fact, when collagen is hydrolyzed, its triple helix falls apart and the long amino acid chains are broken down into small peptides of amino acids which are absorbed, digested and delivered to their site of action in our body. So it doesn’t really make a difference from which animal source the collagen peptides are produced (the amino acid composition is the same for collagen from for example fish, bovine or porcine). It really comes down to the preference of the individuals.

What is collagen loading? This is done when you first start your Collagen journey or want to rapidly experience the benefits of Collagen. For the first month its beneficial to take collagen 3 x a day, for 30 days. Since its neutral in taste, you can put it in anything you drink or eat. For the loading period of 30 days, you take 3 servings a day to initially build up your collagen levels to allow your body to dramatically heal and repair itself.
Once you have completed your loading period, you can return to the minimum recommended daily dose of 10g/10 000mg. 1 heaped 25ml scoop daily is equivalent to one 10g/10 000mg serving (1 heaped tablespoon). Use a heaped scoop twice daily for optimal results.

With advancing years, come joint stiffness, brittle bones and loss of muscle mass. Bones, joints and muscles have a common component, which is collagen. A supplement of 10g per day of Origin Collagen can help to maintain the health of tissues and promote mobility.
Definitely. Our mechanistic studies in the area of joint health clearly show that the effects of collagen on cartilage structure and inflammation are dose-dependent. This nicely links into the dose-dependency of Origin Collagen absorption, with levels of circulating hydroxyproline that increased with the administered dosage. From a scientific point of view the dose-dependency of the effect enforces their biological importance, truly linking it to the supplementation with Origin Collagen.
Origin Collagen is a preventative nutrition that should be taken as early as possible for groups that are more prone to joint and bone conditions such as aging consumers and athletes. Origin Collagen is also an effective solution to preventing and counteracting the skin aging process. Origin Collagen is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Collagen represents 90% of organic bone mass. Bone is a dynamic tissue that is continuously turned over. Published evidence shows that our collagen effectively pushes this balance towards the formation of new bone tissue, at the same time slowing-down bone degradation. An increase in bone mass density can be observed when a supplement of 10g per day of hydrolyzed collagen is taken for a period ranging from 3 to 12 months.
Reduced hydration of the skin is responsible for a loss of elasticity and the development of wrinkles. We have shown that Origin Collagen improves the moisture levels of the skin. Even more, Origin Collagen supports the intrinsic collagen network of deeper skin layers, by increasing its density as well as improving the structure of the fibers.
According to clinical trials, a daily intake of 5 to 10g of our collagen per day will help to maintain the skin’s hydration, firmness and elasticity i.e. its youth and beauty. Some studies have shown that skin’s hydration improves after one to two months. Several communities have demonstrated the benefits of collagen peptides for preserving joint health. Most studies show effects within 3 months.
Yes, Origin Collagen is a pure protein and 100% safe. Origin Collagen can be blended to target specific health benefits, such as with vitamin C, vitamin D etc. Some studies even show the synergistic effect of taking collagen peptides with other nutrients for example calcium (Liu et al. PLoSONE 10(8): 2015).
There is evidence that our collagen peptides can support joint health by alleviating joint discomfort, promote joint function and reducing inflammation. There are multiple potential applications since the target population may vary from athletes (whose joints are subjected to stress), to elderly people (the group most affected by mobility limiting conditions such as joint stiffness).

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Once collagen has been hydrolyzed, the long amino acids, which are too large for the body to absorb properly, are broken down into collagen peptides, which are easy for the gut to absorb. Collagen peptides, also known as hydrolyzed collagen, is a special form of collagen in which the collagen protein has been hydrolyzed. This means that the protein is fully broken down, therefore making it more bioavailable and ready to be easily absorbed into the bloodstream.
Hydrolyzed means that the long amino acid chains that form collagen have been broken down via an enzymatic process into peptides, making it readily available for absorption through the gut. Collagen peptides, also known as hydrolyzed collagen, is a special form of collagen in which the collagen protein has been hydrolyzed. This means that the protein is fully broken down, therefore making it more bioavailable and ready to be easily absorbed into the bloodstream.
Yes, it is Halal. It is certified at source.
In a word: no.
Collagen can’t replace your whey protein powder. They’re both protein supplements, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end.
Some people may benefit more from either collagen or whey, but combining them is a good strategy, depending on your goals and activity level.
If your goal is lean muscle growth or increasing bone density, a whey protein shake is your best bet because it contains all nine essential amino acids plus more BCAAs than collagen.
To recover from an injury, age more gracefully, heal your gut lining or reduce pain and inflammation, collagen is the clear winner.
That’s why you might want to take a combination of both.
Adding whey protein powder along with a scoop of collagen protein to your protein shake will support more lean muscle mass, better bone density, and increase collagen production, which is great news for your skin, joints, tendons, and ligaments.
Adequate protein intake, along with a healthy diet and resistance training, can help with everything from gut health to muscle mass, to better skin elasticity and joint health.
So, grab your whey and collagen protein powders and enjoy your shakes before or after your next workout, as a meal replacement, or midday snack.
